In September 2017 JazzDanmark will introduce the second edition of Sounds of Denmark; a 5 day long festival in London with a strong line-up of Danish artists. The festival will once more happen at the acclaimed live venue – PizzaExpress Jazz Club in Soho.
The project, founded in collaboration with British manager and producer, Sue Edwards, is an ambitious Danish jazz initiative in the UK, marking a new and exciting collaboration between the two nations.. The venue is known for it’s reputation of ’breaking’ great artists such as Gregory Porter and Norah Jones, who both held their debut UK concerts at PizzaExpress.
Sounds of Denmark was initiated last year, and led to a large amount of publicity in the British media – Jazzwise, BBC Radio 3, JazzFM and London Jazz News amongst other prominent media, all keen to cover the Danish artists’ performances at the festival. One of the performing bands, Morten Schantz Godspeed, signed a contract with the British Edition record label during his participation.
In Morten’s own words, his involvement was a push in the right direction:
”It was amazing and magical to play the opening show for Sounds of Denmark at PizzaExpress for a sold out venue. It made so much sense to play in London, when I was also on the verge of releasing music to the British market. I met a lot of people there, who I’m either working directly with, or I now have in my network.” Morten Schantz explains.
The programming for 2017 is now announced, and will consist of seven bands, who have all gone through a comprehensive selection process by a British music industry panel. An open call attracted a large pool of applicants of high quality and artistic breadth. The panel have chosen a programme to reflect the diversity of this pool of applicants, and the festival will represent the Danish jazz scene from internationally experienced bands to less established acts.
